Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (the Gentle Art) is a martial art and combat sport based on ground fighting (ne-waza) and submission holds. BJJ focuses on the skill of taking an opponent to the ground, controlling one's opponent, gaining a dominant position, and using a number of techniques to force them into submission via joint locks or chokeholds.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is one of the most effective, reality-based fighting systems in the world. The basic premise of Jiu-Jitsu is that 90% of fights end up on the ground. As such, Jiu-Jitsu is focused primarily on effective ground fighting. The goal is to put an opponent into situations on the ground where joint locks, submission holds and/or chokes can be applied to force them to submit.
